What is an easy fall drawing to start with?
A single leaf, an acorn or a small pumpkin. Each is one shape with one internal detail, so a thick even outline and four flat colours is enough. Ask for no shading and it stays easy to copy by hand afterwards.
How do I keep autumn colours from going muddy?
Limit yourself to three: a red, an amber and one cool note such as grey-green or slate. Ask for the colours layered rather than blended, which is what keeps coloured pencil and watercolour looking crisp.
