Ambience sound effects

A background layer is never one sound. Name what is actually vibrating, from moving air to unseen voices, and Morphic builds the bed your scene sits inside.

  • Name the layers you want and get them built rather than searched for
  • A bed nobody else is running under their scene at the same time
  • Long, uncompressed audio that sits under a whole sequence

Background layers for film, games, and audio drama

Moving air bed

A low, even rush with nothing happening in it, the layer almost every interior scene needs first. It fills the silence a cut leaves behind without ever asking to be noticed.

Unseen voices

Hundreds of voices at once with no word coming through. It is the fastest way to put people into a shot that has none in it, and it works behind dialogue because nothing in it competes for words.

Compressor hum

A steady motor drone with a fine flutter riding on it. Reach for it when a space needs to feel serviced and occupied rather than abandoned, and cut it dead for the opposite effect.

Running water bed

Thousands of small splashes averaging into one even wash. Water carries a lot of high frequency, so this layer brightens a scene that has gone dull without anything else changing.

Insect shimmer

A high, dry chirr from thousands of small insects rubbing at once. It reads as warmth and stillness at the same time, which is why it does so much work under a scene with no dialogue.

Settling timber

Sparse dry creaks with long silences between them. A layer made of gaps rather than texture, useful when stillness itself is the point and a continuous bed would fill it in.

Ways to use ambience sound effects

Make a cut to a new space land

Changing the background layer on the cut tells an audience they have moved before the picture does. Games use the same trick when a player crosses a threshold.

Hold a pause without dropping into silence

A steady motor layer keeps a held shot alive when nobody is speaking. It carries an interview edit, an animated beat or a narrative podcast the same way.

Tell the audience where they are before anyone speaks

Insects say warm and still, water says open and moving, voices say crowded. One layer sets the setting in a second, on film or in a game level.

Fill a world beyond the edge of the frame

Voices with no visible people, or timber flexing overhead, build rooms and crowds you never have to show. It is the cheapest set extension there is.

SSS

What are ambience sound effects?
Sustained background layers that give a scene a sense of place. Unlike a one-shot effect, nothing in them is meant to be noticed on its own, and their job is to stop a picture sounding as if it were recorded in a vacuum.
How do I make an ambience sound effect from a prompt?
Describe what is physically vibrating instead of naming the setting. Air through a duct, voices with no words in them, a compressor, water over stones: name the source and the layer arrives, whereas naming the place returns something generic.
Why does my background layer come back as separate sounds?
Because the prompt did not say it was continuous. Add unbroken, continuous or no gaps and state a duration, and the same description that returned a few isolated events comes back as one sustained texture.
How many layers does a scene need?
Usually two or three. One steady bed underneath, one layer with movement in it, and something sparse on top. Building them separately means you can change one without regenerating the others, which a single mixed clip never allows.
How do I make a background layer feel further away?
Take the high edge off it and dull the tone rather than turning it down. Distance removes brightness first, so a layer with its top end reduced and a faint short echo behind it reads as far off even at the same level.
Can I use generated ambience commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. It also solves a problem stock beds create for long-form work, where the same recognisable bed turns up in several shows at once.
