Barn owl sound effects

Barn owls do not hoot. They screech, hiss, and snore, and the shriek carries across a field at night. These are the calls they actually make.

  • Ask for the screech, the hiss, or the snore, and the distance
  • A shriek made for your night field, not a shared stock clip
  • Clean audio that drops into a dark exterior

Barn owl sounds for film, games, and horror edits

Screech

0:03

One long shrill cry with a torn edge. Nothing like a hoot, and unsettling enough that horror reaches for it far more often than nature film does.

Hiss

0:04

Breathy and rasping with a rising edge. A threat display rather than a call, so it reads as something cornered rather than something calling.

Snore call

0:05

A rhythmic wheeze in and out. Chicks make it constantly from a nest, and it is strange enough that most audiences cannot place it.

Distant shriek

0:04

The same screech from across open fields, softened at the top with a long fade. Distance turns alarm into atmosphere.

Silent flight

0:04

Barely audible air moving over soft feathers. Barn owls fly almost silently, so this is felt rather than heard and it is genuinely eerie.

Bill snapping

0:03

Hard dry clicks with no voice in them. A warning display, and the sound that most reliably makes an audience uneasy without explaining itself.

Ways to use barn owl sound effects

Punctuate a cut with a shriek

The screech has a fast attack and a torn edge, so it jolts a scene where a hoot would settle one. Pick by which you want.

Let a distant shriek hold an empty field

A far-off cry gives a wide night frame something to rest on. It works in a game level or an animated sequence as much as on film.

Say the building is derelict

A snore call from a nest in a roof space tells the audience nobody has been in there for years, without a single frame of the interior.

Put something passing overhead unseen

Almost-silent air over soft feathers tells the audience something went by, and the near-silence is what makes it unnerving rather than reassuring.

SSS

Do barn owls hoot?
No. Barn owls screech, hiss, snore and snap their bills, and the long shrill shriek is their main call. The hooting people associate with owls comes from tawny and great horned owls, which are different species entirely.
Why does my barn owl come out hooting?
Because the model reaches for the most common owl sound unless told otherwise. Say the call is a harsh rasping screech and explicitly not a hoot, and describe the torn, hissing edge, which no hoot has.
What is a barn owl snore?
The rhythmic rasping wheeze chicks make while begging in a nest. It sounds nothing like a bird, which makes it genuinely useful for a derelict building: an audience hears something living up there without being able to name it.
Why do barn owls sound so unsettling?
The screech is unmusical and has a torn, hissing texture with no tone in it, closer to a scream than a call. Horror uses it constantly for that reason, while nature films tend to reach for a hoot instead.
Do barn owls make any sound in flight?
Almost none. Their feathers are structured to break up air flow, so a bird can pass very close and be barely audible. That near-silence is worth using deliberately: it unsettles an audience more than a loud wingbeat would.
Can I use these barn owl sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each call is generated rather than pulled from a shared catalogue, you also avoid the clip turning up in someone else's night sequence.
