Cartoon sound effects

Boings, whooshes, splats, slide whistles, anvil drops, and the pattering run before a character leaves the frame. Six devices, not six variations.

  • Pick the device the gag needs, not a generic cartoon noise
  • A take cut to your animation, not a soundboard rip
  • Clean audio timed to the frame

Whoosh

0:02

A smooth air rush sweeping up then away. It gives movement somewhere to go, which a static hit never does.

Splat

0:02

One thick slapping impact with a soft spreading tail. The spread is what makes it wet rather than merely hard.

Slide whistle

0:03

A thin swoop up and back in one glide. It exaggerates movement, so it needs something physically happening to sit against.

Running feet

0:04

Rapid pattering on the spot then accelerating away. The spin before the exit is the whole gag.

Anvil drop

0:03

A descending whistle into a heavy metallic clang. Two parts, and the whistle is what tells the audience it is coming.

Bubble pop trio

0:03

Three light rounded pops rising in pitch. Small and bright, and it suits something appearing rather than landing.

Ways to use cartoon sound effects

Give a movement somewhere to go

A whoosh implies travel, so a character or a graphic arriving feels like it came from somewhere rather than appearing.

Let a run fill the beat before an exit

Pattering feet accelerating away carries the whole action, so the frame can stay still while the character leaves.

Warn the audience something is falling

A descending whistle before the clang gives them a second to anticipate, which is what makes the impact land.

Land a hit the camera never shows

A splat off screen tells the audience exactly what happened, and their imagination supplies a messier version.

SSS

What are the classic cartoon sound devices?
Whooshes for movement, boings for bounces, splats for impacts, slide whistles for exaggerated rises and falls, descending whistles for falling objects, and pattering feet for exits. Each does one job, and naming which one matters far more than saying cartoon.
Why does a falling object need a whistle first?
Anticipation. The descending whistle tells an audience something is coming down before it lands, so the clang arrives as a payoff rather than a surprise. Without it the impact is just a noise.
How do I make a graphic feel like it moved?
Put a whoosh in front of it. A rising air rush implies the object travelled from somewhere off screen, which turns an appearance into an arrival for the cost of about a second.
What makes a splat sound wet rather than hard?
The tail. A hard impact stops immediately, while a wet one spreads for a moment afterwards. Asking for a soft spreading tail is what separates the two, more than the impact itself.
How many cartoon sounds should one scene use?
Fewer than instinct suggests. Each device points at a specific action, and stacking several in a few seconds stops any of them reading clearly. Choose the one action that most needs pointing at.
Can I use these cartoon sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each one is generated rather than pulled off a shared soundboard, you also avoid the exact clip your audience has already heard.
