Punctuate a decision or an arrival
A damped strike stops dead, so it marks a frame without leaving a tail across the next shot. It is the only version that behaves like a hit rather than a cue.

Gong sound effect
A struck metal disc and the long swell that follows it. Set the size, the mallet, and how far the sound is allowed to run.
- Set the size of the disc, the mallet, and the length of the decay
- A strike made for your scene instead of the one stock hit everyone uses
- Clean audio with the full shimmer intact, not a fade someone else chose
Gong strikes for film, meditation, and game audio
Large gong
One strike on a big bronze disc, with the swell arriving after the hit rather than at it. That delayed bloom is what makes it feel enormous.
Small gong
A hard mallet on a small disc: bright at the front, gone in a few seconds. Use it where the large gong would swallow the next line of dialogue.
Muted strike
Struck and damped by a hand immediately. The ring is cut off, which turns a resonant instrument into a punctuation mark you can place on a frame.
Rolling swell
Mallets rolled continuously until the metal roars. It builds from nothing, so it fits under a title card or a rising shot without needing a cue point.
Dinner gong
Three measured strikes on a small suspended disc. The spacing does the work: it reads as a signal to people rather than a dramatic moment.
Distant gong
The large strike heard from far off, with the high shimmer gone and a short echo behind it. Built from a close take rather than a quiet one.

Ways to use a gong sound effect
Fill a long still shot without reaching for music
Twelve seconds of shimmer will carry a held frame on its own, in a meditation piece, a game menu, or an animated interlude.

Set a ceremonial mood before anything happens
A roll that builds from silence tells an audience something formal is about to begin, and it does it before a single word is spoken.

Imply a building you never show inside of
A distant strike with the shimmer stripped off it places a temple or a hall somewhere beyond the frame, in a shot that shows only landscape.

SSS
What does a gong sound like?
A soft initial contact followed by a metallic swell that arrives a moment later and then shimmers for several seconds. The delay between the strike and the bloom is the detail that separates a gong from a bell or a cymbal.
How do I make a gong sound effect?
Describe the disc, the mallet, and the decay. Say how large the gong is, whether the mallet is soft or hard, and how long the sound is allowed to ring. The decay is the part worth being specific about, because it is most of the sound.
Why does my gong sound like a cymbal?
Because the attack is too bright and the decay too short. A hard mallet on a small disc lands close to a cymbal, so ask for a large bronze disc, a soft mallet, and a swell that blooms after the strike rather than at it.
How long should a gong ring for?
Ten to fifteen seconds for a large one, and around four for a small one. Generate the full decay and fade it yourself in the edit, because a recording that has already been cut short cannot be extended back out.
How do I stop a gong swamping the dialogue after it?
Use a damped strike, or a small gong instead of a large one. The long low swell of a big disc sits directly under a speaking voice, so cutting the ring off at the source is far easier than fixing it with an equaliser afterwards.
Can I use a generated gong sound commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Generating it also means you get the whole decay rather than the length someone else decided to publish.
