Single pistol shot
A sharp crack with a hard instant attack and almost no tail. The default gunshot, and the one that reads as close and enclosed rather than out in the open.
Shotgun blast
Wider and lower than a pistol, with a rough scattering edge on the attack. Use it when the shot needs to feel heavy rather than precise.
Shotgun pump

How do I make a gunshot sound like it is indoors or outdoors?
Change the tail, not the shot. A hard crack with a short dry cut-off reads as close and enclosed; the same crack followed by a long tail rolling away and thinning reads as open ground.
How do I get a shotgun instead of a pistol?
Describe the attack. A shotgun is a wide low-heavy boom with a rough scattering edge, where a pistol is a sharp high crack. Naming the weapon alone is less reliable than naming how the front of the sound behaves.
How do I get machine gun fire rather than a single shot?
Give it a count and a rhythm. "Six rapid evenly spaced cracks in quick succession then silence" returns a machine gun burst; asking for automatic fire without a count tends to return one shot or an unusably long run.
Why does my gunshot come back quiet or empty?
It was asked for too short. Anything under about a second and a half tends to return silence, so ask for 2 seconds and trim the tail in your editor if you want it tighter.
