How do I draw a tamal so it reads clearly?
The twisted or folded ends of the husk are what identify it. Ask for those explicitly, plus the long fibres running down the wrapper. Without them a wrapped tamal just reads as a pale bundle.
Should I draw the tamal wrapped or opened?
Opened is easier to read and more appetising, because you see the masa and the filling. Wrapped works better for a small vignette or an icon where the silhouette has to carry it.
How do I draw steam without it looking like smoke?
Ask for soft lifted shapes that stay close to the pot and fade out within a short distance. Smoke drifts and thins across the whole frame; steam stays low, wide and lighter at the edges.
