How do I make a dog sound big?
Lengthen the tail, not the volume. A large dog's bark rings on after the attack because there is more body behind it, while a small dog's stops almost immediately. Asking for a heavy resonant bark with a long tail does more than asking for a loud one.
How do I make barking sound like it is next door?
Ask for it muffled through a wall with the bright edge removed. Walls take out high frequencies first, so a bark from the next room is rounded and has no sharp attack, and generating it that way beats filtering afterwards.
What makes a dog sound threatening rather than alert?
Growling between the barks. A bark on its own reads as an announcement, whereas barking that keeps dropping into a low growl reads as an animal deciding what to do, which is far more unsettling.
Why does my small dog bark sound like a big one?
Usually the gaps. Small dogs bark almost continuously with no space between, while large dogs pause. Ask for rapid yapping with almost no gaps and the size follows even before the pitch does.
Can barking play under dialogue?
Distant barking can, because the tail is long and the attack is soft. A close bark cannot: it has a sharp transient in the same range as speech and will cut straight across a line however carefully it is placed.
