How do I make a drum sound effect from a description?
Describe the strike rather than the instrument. Say the size of the head, what hits it, how many strokes there are, and how long it rings. A stick into a taut skin and a bare palm into the same skin are two completely different sounds, and only the striker tells the model which one you meant.
What makes a drum work as a sound effect rather than as music?
Isolation and irregular spacing. A drum in a piece of music sits in a grid with other instruments, while a drum used as an effect arrives alone and lands on a picture cut. Asking for a small number of strokes with no other instruments present is what keeps it reading as punctuation.
Which drum should I use to make a scene feel tense?
A large low drum played slowly, and ideally a figure that falls in pitch. Low frequencies read as weight and threat, and a descending line tells an audience that something is deteriorating. A bright snare over the same picture reads as energy instead, which is almost the opposite note.
How do I stop a drum accent clashing with my music track?
Pick a drum that occupies a different frequency range from the track underneath. Closed hi-hat ticks and rim-bright snares sit above most scores, while a deep kick argues directly with the bassline. Choosing the register is far more effective than pulling the level down.
How long should a cymbal decay be?
