Falling run

Power down

Defeat thud
One dull low impact with the brightness taken out of the front. Reach for it when the attempt is finished and nothing is going to follow the sound.
Deflating sink

Retro fail

What is a fail sound effect?
It is the cue that marks the end of an unsuccessful attempt, built almost always on something moving downwards in pitch. That descent is the whole trick, because a falling shape reads as failure across every culture and needs no explanation at all.
How do I make a fail sound effect?
Describe the direction and the texture. Say the pitch steps down in even notes or slides down continuously, say whether the tone is bright and buzzy or dull and thick, and give it a length of around two seconds so the front of it survives.
What is the difference between a fail sound and an error sound?
A fail sound closes an attempt while an error sound interrupts one. Errors are usually flat or rising, because the user is expected to try again immediately, whereas a fail cue falls away to nothing to signal that the round is genuinely over.
How do I make a fail cue funny instead of harsh?
Use air rather than a tone. A whistling deflating sink or a wobbling slide carries comedy that a clean synthetic note never will, while a dull low impact with no ring on it reads as serious and shuts the moment down.
How short should a fail cue in a game be?
Around one and a half to two seconds, and always generated at that length rather than shorter. Anything asked for under about a second and a half tends to come back thin or empty, so make the full-length version and trim it in your editor.
