Japanese sound effects

A station platform chime, a sliding paper door, the crossing signal, a convenience store doorbell, cicadas in summer, and a bamboo fountain. Real places rather than stylised ones.

  • Ask for the specific object, because a sliding paper door is nothing like a hinged one

Place sounds for film, games, and animation

Platform chime

Two soft bell tones on a rising interval through a speaker. Small, and it places a whole station in two seconds.

Sliding paper door

A light panel running in a groove, ending in a gentle stop. Dry and soft, with none of the click a hinged door has.

Crossing signal

A slow two-tone beep with a gap between each pair. The gap is what separates it from an alarm.

Store doorbell

A short bright electronic phrase as a door opens. Cheerful and slightly tinny, which is the whole character.

Cicadas

Many insects at a dense steady rate, each a dry rapid rasp. Prompted as its unit first, or it returns as static.

Bamboo fountain

Water filling a hollow tube until it tips and knocks against stone. The slow wait before the knock is the point.

Ways to use a japanese sound effect

Punctuate an arrival

A platform chime on the cut puts a character at a station without an establishing shot, on film or in a game.

Fill a still exterior without music

Cicadas under a wide shot carry a long hold, and they say summer more precisely than any music cue could.

Set the season and the hour

Cicadas read as high summer. A bamboo fountain reads as a quiet garden at any hour. Two sounds, two completely different scenes.

Imply the street outside

A crossing signal heard through a window puts a town beyond the room, which grows a location without a second set.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How do I get a sliding paper door rather than a normal one?
Describe the mechanism. A panel running along a track in a groove, ending in a gentle stop, is a completely different sound from a hinged door with a latch. Naming the material alone is not enough.
Why does my cicada track sound like static?
It was prompted as one texture. Any dense natural sound needs its unit described first, here a dry rapid rasp from a single insect, and the density second. That is what stops it flattening into noise.
How is this different from the anime page?
This is real places; that one is stylised drawing conventions. A sliding door here sounds like a door, where the anime page carries impacts and speed lines that have no real-world recording at all.
Which single clip does the most work?
The platform chime. Two seconds of two soft bell tones establishes a station, a commute, and a whole country, which is a lot of location for one small sound.
How do I set the time of year?
Cicadas are the strongest seasonal cue available and read immediately as high summer. If you want a scene to be any other season, keep them out of it entirely.
Can I use these in a commercial project?
Yes. Audio generated on a paid Morphic plan is cleared for commercial use, including film, games, and advertising.
