Scribble

How do I make a DJ scratch sound effect?
Describe the hand movement rather than naming the technique. Say which direction the record travels, how fast, how many passes there are, and whether a switch is cutting the tone in and out. A generator understands a movement far better than it understands a technique name.
What are the main scratch techniques?
Six cover most of what you hear: the plain forward and back movement, the clipped push, the switched version chopped into even pieces, the slow heavy drag, the push interrupted twice, and the very fast buzzing fill. Everything else tends to be a combination of those.
Why does my scratch sound smooth instead of sharp?
Because the ends are not being cut. Most of the character in a scratch comes from where the tone starts and stops, so ask for it clipped hard at both ends. A movement allowed to fade in and out reads as a sweep instead.
How long should a scratch be?
Around one and a half to three seconds for a single gesture, which is long enough to hear the movement travel and short enough to sit inside a bar. Ask for the longer version and trim the front, since a gesture cut short at the end loses its shape.
Do I need a record to make a scratch sound?
No, describing the movement is enough. What your ear identifies as a scratch is grit, direction, and hard edges, so a prompt that specifies those gives you the gesture without a turntable, a needle, or a piece of vinyl to wear out.
