Fish sound effects

A surface splash, a tail flick under water, the flapping on a deck, feeding at the surface, and the gulp people think of first. Describe the size and Morphic builds it.

  • Ask for the size of the body, which changes the splash far more than the volume does
  • Audio cut for your shot rather than a stock splash already heard across other productions

Fish sound effects

Fish sounds for film, games, and animation

Surface splash

A short wet slap with a light scatter after it. Small and quick, which is what a fish actually sounds like.

Big jump

A deep wet slap with a broad scatter. The weight is in the scatter rather than the impact, so leave room for it.

Tail flick under water

A muffled thump and a swirl with no surface break at all. The cue for something moving below where nobody can see it.

Flapping on a deck

Wet slapping at uneven spacing against a hard surface. The unevenness is what makes it read as alive.

Feeding at the surface

Many small wet pops and sucks at uneven spacing. Reads as a lot of fish, which one splash never manages.

Gulp

One wet mouth opening and closing. Not what a real fish sounds like, and exactly what an audience expects one to.

Ways to use a fish sound effect

Punctuate a bite on the line

A small splash on the cut turns a still shot of water into an event, which is most of what a fishing scene needs.

Fill a still water shot without music

Surface feeding running under a wide shot keeps a calm scene alive, so a long hold does not need a track underneath.

Tell the audience how big it is

A short light slap reads as something small. A deep slap with a broad scatter reads as something worth filming. The scatter carries the size.

Put something under the surface

A muffled thump and a swirl with no splash puts a body below the water, which is far more unsettling than showing it.

Perguntas frequentes

Do fish actually make a sound?
Mostly they make sounds in water rather than with a voice, which is why every card here is a splash, a swirl, or a slap. The gulp is the exception: audiences expect it, so it earns its place even though real fish do not do it.
How do I make the fish sound bigger?
Change what happens after the impact. A broad scatter of water after a deep slap reads as a large body; a light quick scatter reads as a small one. Volume alone does not shift the size.
How do I imply something under the water?
Rule out the surface. Ask for a muffled underwater thump and a swirling rush with no surface splash at all, since it is the absence of a break that puts the animal below.
How is this different from the underwater page?
Those pages are about water itself, the pressure, the bubbles, the muffling. This one is about what a body does to water when it moves. Every card here has an animal in it.
Why does my flapping sound mechanical?
The spacing is too regular. Ask for uneven spacing between the slaps, because a live animal never repeats itself on a fixed interval and that irregularity is what the ear reads as alive.
Can I use these in a commercial project?
Yes. Audio generated on a paid Morphic plan is cleared for commercial use, including film, games, and advertising.
