What does a real lion roar sound like?

Why does my lion roar sound fake?
Almost always because it is one sustained blast with no grunts after it. Ask explicitly for the roar to fall into a series of moaning grunts that trail away, and the whole thing changes character.
What is the difference between a roar and a growl?
Distance and intent. A roar is a territorial message meant to travel for miles, while a growl is close-range warning. If a scene needs the animal to feel near, the growl is the better choice even though it is quieter.
Why do lion cubs sound like house cats?
Because they are small, and body size drives the amount of chest resonance in a call far more than species does. Cub calls are thin mews with almost no body, which is a useful surprise when a scene needs to soften.
How do I make a lion sound far away?
