Ahh sound effect

One open vowel, and six different meanings depending on how it moves. Ask for relief, realisation, alarm or a room of voices holding a single note.

  • Say whether the vowel rises, falls or holds, and how long it runs
  • A performance recorded for your scene, not a clip a thousand videos share
  • Clean vocal audio you can place under picture without it fighting anything

Ahh readings for edits, shorts, and animation

Relieved ahh

Warm, slow and falling gently away, the sound of somebody finally getting what they wanted. The version most edits are after, and the one that works over a cut with no setup at all.

Realisation ahh

Steady, clear and descending, with none of the breath of the relieved take. The fall is the whole performance: it tells the audience a character has just worked something out.

Startled ahh

Thrown out hard and stopped dead. Short and shouted reads as alarm rather than emotion, so it lands on an interruption where a held vowel would drag.

Long panicked ahh

Held until the breath gives out, wavering as it goes. The instability at the end is what separates fear from a shout, and it is the part most stock takes are missing.

Choir ahh

Several voices holding one open chord with no words in it. It reads as revelation rather than reaction, which is why it turns up under reveals and product shots.

Group ahh of wonder

A room reacting at once, rising rather than holding. Unlike the choir take it is speech, so it reads as real people rather than as a musical flourish.

Ways to use an ahh sound effect

Land a reaction on the frame it belongs to

A short shouted vowel arrives with a hard front edge and gets out of the way, so an interruption in a game scene or an animated cut reads on the exact frame.

Hold a long shot without adding music

A sustained group chord covers several seconds on its own. It works under a slow reveal in an explainer or a title card as readily as under a film shot.

Set the mood before a single line is spoken

A warm falling vowel opens a scene as contentment, where the same word wavering reads as fear. One take decides how an audience feels about the shot.

Suggest a crowd you never have to show

Scattered voices rising in wonder put people around the frame in a game level, an animation or a live-action cut, with nobody cast and nothing staged.

SSS

What is the ahh sound effect?
It is an open sustained vowel used as a reaction, and its meaning comes entirely from how it moves. Falling gently reads as relief, falling steadily reads as understanding, and rising fast reads as alarm, all from the same syllable.
How do I make an ahh sound effect?
Describe the pitch movement and the length. Say whether the vowel rises, falls or stays level, how many seconds it is held, and how much breath is behind it. Naming the emotion helps far less than naming the shape of the note.
Why does my ahh sound like a yawn?
Because it starts too softly. A yawn opens gradually with a lot of air, so ask for a defined start and a clear steady tone, and keep the breathiness for the relieved reading where it belongs.
What is the difference between a spoken ahh and a choir ahh?
A spoken one is a reaction and a sung one is a texture. Voices holding a single open chord read as music and can sit under a whole shot, while a spoken vowel belongs to a character and needs a moment on screen to belong to.
How long should a held vowel run?
Around three seconds for relief or realisation, and up to five when a group is sustaining a chord under picture. Very short requests are the ones generators handle worst, so ask for at least a second and a half and trim afterwards.
Can I use a generated ahh commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Recording the vowel yourself also lets a whole series share one voice and one register, which no archive of scattered clips can give you.
