Click sound effect

A mouse button, a mechanical key, a light switch, a camera shutter, and the synthetic tick a product makes. Each click says which object it is.

  • Say what is clicking, since the object is the sound
  • A tick you own, not a rip doing the rounds
  • Clean audio short enough to disappear after it lands
A mouse button caught at the moment of depression in raking light, everything else dark

Click types for products, edits, and games

Mouse click

0:02

A dry plastic tick with a tiny hollow ring. The ring is the shell of the mouse, and without it the click reads as anything at all.

Mechanical key

0:02

A firm tactile click with a plastic bottom-out after it. Two events, and the second is what makes it a keyboard.

Light switch

0:02

A hard plastic snap with a spring behind it. Louder and more final than any interface click, and it changes a room.

Camera shutter

0:02

A fast mechanical slap with a mirror clack. Two moving parts, which is why a synthetic shutter never quite convinces.

Pen click

0:02

A small sharp double tick from a ballpoint. Idle and human, and it puts a person in a room doing nothing much.

Synthetic UI tick

0:02

A clean generated tick with no mechanism behind it. Built to fire hundreds of times without becoming irritating.

Ways to use a click sound effect

Confirm an action in a product

A soft synthetic tick acknowledges a tap without commenting on it, and it survives being heard hundreds of times a day.

Let idle clicking hold a waiting scene

A pen clicked repeatedly puts a person in a room with nothing to do, and it says more about them than dialogue would.

Change a room without showing it

A light switch is loud and final, so it tells the audience the lights just went on or off in a shot that never pans.

Show a photograph being taken

A shutter with a mirror clack is unmistakable, so it puts a camera in a scene without any of it in frame.

SSS

How do I make a click sound like a specific object?
Describe what resonates after the tick. A mouse has a small hollow shell, a keyboard has a plastic bottom-out, a switch has a spring, and a shutter has a mirror. That second event is what identifies the object.
Why does my click sound generic?
Because it is only the transient. A click on its own is a tick with no character; the tiny resonance behind it is what an ear uses to work out what was clicked, and prompts usually leave it out.
What makes a good interface click?
Softness and brevity. A synthetic tick with no mechanical character fires hundreds of times a day without irritating anyone, whereas a sharp mechanical click starts to grate after the first dozen.
Why does a synthetic camera shutter never convince?
Because a real shutter is two moving parts, not one. The mechanical slap and the mirror clack arrive in quick succession, and a single synthesised tick has no way to suggest that mechanism.
How do I use clicking as characterisation?
Make it idle and irregular. A pen clicked at an uneven rate reads as someone waiting or thinking, and it tells an audience about a person more efficiently than a line of dialogue would.
Can I use these click sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each one is generated rather than pulled off a shared soundboard, you also avoid shipping the same cue as everyone else.
