How do I make a riser sound effect?
Say what physically rises and how. Hiss opening upward, a tone tightening, clicks speeding up, or metal grinding under pressure all read as a build, but they land completely differently. Naming the mechanism gets you a specific one instead of a generic sweep.
Where should a riser start and stop?
It should stop on the frame you cut, and start wherever that leaves it. Generate the climb a little longer than you need and trim from the front, because a build that begins late never regains the tension it skipped, while a trimmed one loses nothing.
Should a riser be noise or a tone?
Noise if there is music under it, a tone if there is not. Filtered hiss has no pitch centre so it fits over any key, while a tonal climb will fight a track it disagrees with. On a scene with no score, the tone is far more unsettling.
Why does my riser lose tension halfway through?
Because it stops changing. Tension comes from continuous movement, so if the climb reaches its brightest point early it spends the rest of its length holding still. Ask for the rise to keep opening every second, right up to the moment it stops.
How do I stop a riser burying the dialogue under it?
Use the accelerating tick instead of the hiss. Clicks build through the rate they arrive at rather than by filling the spectrum, so the mid range stays clear and a line spoken over the top of it stays completely intelligible.
