TV static sound effect

Snow on an untuned channel, the snap of a channel changing, and the thin whine an old set makes on its own. Describe the box and the noise arrives with it.

  • Ask for the exact snow you need, thick and roaring or thin and grainy
  • A take that belongs to your project alone rather than a stock file in a thousand others
  • Clean audio that sits under picture with nothing else needing to be layered on

Screen noise from snow to a dying signal

Untuned snow

Dense grainy hiss through a small paper cone, boxy the way a set speaker makes it. This is the version most edits want, and the reason it reads as a television rather than as noise.

Channel snap

A mechanical clunk followed straight away by a stab of hiss. The clunk is what dates the scene, because a set with a dial belongs to a decade a remote does not.

Signal lost

A thin chirp cutting out and hiss flooding into the gap behind it. Reach for it when the point is the moment of losing the picture rather than the noise afterwards.

Rolling interference

Hiss with a slow band of buzz sweeping through it, the sound that goes with a picture that will not hold still. The movement is what separates it from flat snow.

Old set whine

A thin high electrical tone with hiss beneath it. Most people never notice it in a room and recognise it instantly on a soundtrack, which makes it very cheap tension.

Snow through a wall

The same snow with its high edge gone, the tone dulled, and a faint short echo behind it. That colour change puts the set in the next room rather than in frame.

Ways to use a TV static sound effect

Punch a cut with the snap of a channel changing

A clunk and a stab of hiss make a hard join between two shots. It works as a scene change in a game menu or an animated short as readily as in a montage.

Keep a still frame alive without adding a track

Ten seconds of snow holds an empty shot on its own. A podcast cold open, a title card or a held game screen all take it without any music underneath.

Date a scene to an era of glass screens

A picture tube whine puts a room decades back without a single prop change. Period animation and retro game audio lean on it for exactly the same reason.

Put a television in a room you never show

Dulled hiss with a short echo behind it builds a set, a wall and a distance for the audience. Nothing has to be on camera for the house to feel occupied.

SSS

What is a TV static sound effect?
It is the hiss an untuned television makes when there is no signal to decode, heard through the set speaker rather than as pure noise. That speaker is why it sounds boxy and grainy instead of smooth, and why it reads as a television and not as rain.
How do I make a TV static sound effect?
Describe the speaker as well as the hiss. Say the noise is being pushed through a small paper cone, call it grainy and boxy, and give it a length with the word unbroken in it. Naming the television alone tends to return a voice or a jingle instead.
Why does my static come back as rain?
Because rain and snow are both broadband noise, and rain is far more common in training data. Adding a plain never rain anchor and asking for an even level with no droplets and no pulsing moves it back to a flat electronic hiss.
How do I make a television sound like it is in another room?
Change the colour rather than the level. Ask for the bright high edge removed, the tone dulled, and a faint short echo behind it. A take that has simply been turned down still sounds close, only quieter, which is what gives the trick away.
What makes a static clip feel like an old set?
A mechanical clunk before the hiss, or a thin high whine underneath it. A rotary selector and a glass picture tube both make noises a flat panel cannot, so either detail dates the scene faster than the snow itself does.
Can I use generated TV static sound effects commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Screen noise gets reached for constantly in horror and period work, so a take that has not already appeared in a hundred other projects is worth having.
