How do you draw a hot air balloon so it looks round?
The gore seams do the work. Every seam should curve outward as it leaves the crown and pull back in toward the mouth, and the seams nearer the edges should bunch closer together. Straight vertical stripes flatten the envelope instantly.
What shape is the envelope exactly?
It is an upside down teardrop, not a circle. The widest point sits above the middle, the bottom tapers to the mouth, and the crown is slightly flattened. Ask for that profile rather than a sphere with a basket under it.
How do I draw the basket and the ropes?
Keep the basket small, roughly a sixth of the envelope width, and hang it well below the mouth. Draw the suspension lines converging toward the envelope rather than staying parallel, and keep the weave suggested rather than fully detailed.
How do I draw the burner flame?
Draw the light rather than the flame. Leave the inside of the envelope mouth as the brightest area, let the glow fade upward, and darken everything around the basket. In charcoal you can lift that glow back out with an eraser.
How do I draw several balloons without them looking pasted on?
Change the size, the height and the angle of each one, and let a couple overlap. Reduce the far balloons to plain outlines with no seam detail. Matching balloons at equal spacing read as clip art rather than a sky.
