How do I draw smoke so it looks soft?
Blend the body but keep one or two hard edges where the ribbon folds over itself. Smoke that is soft everywhere reads as fog. The contrast between the blurred mass and those few crisp turns is what makes it look like smoke.

Shade the paper around it rather than the smoke itself. Lay a light grey tone across the background, then lift the smoke back out with an eraser, which is how you get pale smoke without drawing it in outline.
