What is the difference between a musical sound effect and music?
Count. One note or one gesture is an effect and sits inside a scene. Two or more notes in sequence starts to be a phrase, and a phrase asks the audience to listen to it rather than through it.
How is this different from the stinger and riser pages?
Those are cues, written to move an edit along. These are objects: a lid, a case, a needle, one struck note. Instruments as Foley rather than as score.
How do I get a single note rather than a melody?
Say one, and say how it ends. "One single note struck firmly and left to ring out" gives you an effect, where asking for a piano sound gives you somebody playing.
Why does my choked cymbal still ring?
The stop was not in the prompt. Ask for it stopped immediately by a hand with no ring at all, since a cymbal rings by default and only an explicit instruction removes it.
What does the needle drop actually do for a scene?
It sets a period and a mood in about two seconds, and the surface crackle afterwards gives you a bed you can leave running under dialogue without it reading as music.
