What makes a jump scare land?
An instant attack with nothing before it. Any fade or lead-in gives an audience half a second of warning, which is enough to brace, and a braced audience does not flinch however loud the sound is.
How is this different from horror sound design?
A scare arrives and is over, while horror builds and never resolves. Use these for the moment itself and a drone or rising line underneath for the dread that gets you there.
Why does a scream cut short work better than a full one?
Because the audience finishes it. Cutting the sound dead removes the information about what happened, and whatever they imagine is worse and more personal than anything you could show them.
Can a quiet sound be scary?
Yes, and often more so. A whisper very close to the microphone implies something is beside the listener, which is more threatening than volume, provided the scene before it was quiet enough for the contrast to register.
Why does my door slam sound fake?
Because the room is missing. A real slam sets the frame and the walls rattling for a moment afterwards, and without that reaction the impact reads as a sample rather than an event in a space.
