What is in a thunderstorm sound effect?
Two layers: thunder and the rain underneath it. Wind is sometimes a third. Generating them separately and combining them gives you far more control than asking for a storm in one go, because you can move the thunder without changing the rain.
How do I make a storm sound close or far away?
The crack is the tell. A nearby strike has a hard bright snap at the front before it starts rolling, while a distant one has no snap at all, only a low uneven rumble with a long decay. Ask for or omit that crack and the distance follows.
How do I make thunder sound realistic?
Give it an uneven texture and a long decay. Real thunder is a rumble that varies as it rolls, not a smooth boom, and it takes several seconds to die away. A short, even peal is the most common reason a generated storm sounds synthetic.
Should I generate rain and thunder together or separately?
Separately, in most cases. Together is quicker, but you lose the ability to time a thunder peal to a cut or to lift the rain under dialogue. Generate a rain bed on its own, then place individual peals over it where the scene needs them.
Can I use a storm bed under dialogue?
Yes, if you keep the thunder distant. Rain sits mostly above the speech range, but a close crack does not, and it will bury a line. Use rolls with no crack in them for anything that plays under talking.
