Perguntas frequentes

How do I draw a river step by step, the easy way?
Draw two curved lines from the bottom of the page that wind back and get closer together as they rise. That gap is the water. Add a bank line on each side, a few trees for scale, then horizontal marks on the surface. Nothing else is needed.
Why does my river look like a road?
Because the surface is empty. Water needs horizontal marks, never marks that follow the direction of flow, plus a reflection under anything standing on the bank. Adding both immediately separates a river from a path.
How do I draw reflections in a river?
Repeat the object upside down directly below itself, keep it slightly darker and less detailed than the real thing, then break it with short horizontal gaps. The rougher the water, the shorter and more broken the pieces.
How do I draw moving water over rocks?
Leave the fastest water as blank paper and draw only what surrounds it. Put the darkest tone immediately downstream of each rock, add a few curved lines where the current bends around it, and keep the foam edges ragged.
How do I show the river getting further away?
Narrow the gap between the banks as it recedes and reduce the detail with it. Ripple marks should get shorter and closer together toward the horizon, and the contrast between water and bank should fade to almost nothing.
What medium suits a river drawing best?
Graphite handles still reflections best because you can control the gradient. Ink line suits a simple winding river with clean banks, and charcoal is the one for a dark gorge where the water needs to be the brightest shape.
