Preguntas frecuentes

How do I draw coral so it looks structural and not like a plant?
Coral branches fork rather than sprout. Each arm splits into two or three of roughly equal thickness and the tips end blunt, not tapered to a point. Drawing it like a twig with fine ends is what makes it read as a shrub underwater.
How do I draw the texture on a brain coral?
Draw the grooves, not the ridges. Lay winding parallel channels across the dome and let them follow the curve of the surface so the form stays round. Leaving the grooves as bare paper between dense stipple gives you the texture and the volume at once.
What is the easiest coral to draw for a beginner?
A boulder or brain coral, because it is a single rounded volume with a surface pattern rather than a branching structure. A sea fan is the hardest, since the lattice has to keep getting finer toward the edge while staying evenly spaced.
How do I draw a sea fan without the lattice going muddy?
Build it in two passes. Draw the main ribs first as a fan of curves radiating from the base, then cross them with finer threads only in the outer two thirds. Keeping the inner area more open is what stops the whole shape filling in as a grey mass.
How do I get a plain background or crop a coral drawing?
Ask for a flat white background with no reef or water around the specimen, then crop it on the Canvas. That keeps the silhouette clean, which matters if you are placing several corals into one plate layout or a repeating print.
Can I keep a set of coral drawings in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first specimen, then apply it as you generate each growth form so the line weight, texture treatment and palette stay matched across the set. That is what turns six separate drawings into a single botanical plate.
