Notification sounds for apps, products, and edits

Soft ping

0:02

Two warm notes rising with no sharp attack. Built to survive being heard forty times a day, which is the hardest thing to ask of an interface sound.

Alert chime

0:01

Three clear bell-like notes. Brighter and more insistent, so it suits something the user genuinely needs to look at rather than routine traffic.

Error tone

0:02

Two flat notes falling. Falling pitch reads as failure without any words, and the dullness is what stops it sounding like a success cue.

Message pop

0:02

A light rounded pop with an instant stop. Almost no information in it, which is exactly right for something arriving constantly in the background.

Urgent buzz

0:03

A hard repeating buzz with no musicality. It reads as a demand rather than a message, so reserve it for things that genuinely cannot wait.

Unlock swell

0:03

A short rising swell rather than a discrete note. It suits a state change, where a chime would read as a message arriving instead.

Ways to use notification sound effects

Tell a user something happened

A soft rising ping confirms an event before anyone reads the screen. Keep it under two seconds so it never feels like a delay in the interaction.

Let a single pop carry a beat in a demo

A single pop carries a moment in a product demo or an explainer where a music cue would be heavy handed. It works in a game menu too.

Show that something went wrong

A falling dull tone reads as failure with no words at all. Keeping the same voice as your success cue is what makes the meaning obvious immediately.

Put a phone in a scene without showing one

A notification from off screen tells the audience someone is being contacted, in a shot that never cuts to a device. It moves a plot along for one clip.

Preguntas frecuentes

What makes a good notification sound?
Brevity and restraint. Under two seconds, a soft attack, and a short decay. Sharp attacks and long tails are what wear on people hearing a cue dozens of times a day, and a notification is judged on the fortieth time it plays rather than the first.
How do I design a set of cues that work together?
Use one voice across all of them and change only the pitch direction and the brightness. Rising means success, falling means failure, brighter means more urgent. A user then learns one family rather than several unrelated noises.
How long should a notification sound be?
Between one and two seconds for almost everything. Anything longer starts to feel like a delay in whatever the user was doing, and they notice that far more than they notice the sound itself.
Can I use a phone's built-in notification sound in my app?
No. The cues that ship with a platform are that company's assets, and reusing them in your own product is not something extracting the file makes lawful. Generating your own gives you a cue that does the same job and that you can ship.
How do I make an alert urgent without being annoying?
Change the note count and the brightness rather than the volume. Three separated bright notes read as more urgent than two soft ones at the same level, and raising the volume is what actually makes a cue unpleasant.
Can I use these notification sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Generating your own also keeps you clear of the trademark question that comes with reusing a recognisable platform sound.
