FAQ

How do I draw a cherry blossom flower correctly?
Five petals, each one notched at the tip rather than rounded, arranged around a centre that is slightly off if the flower is turned. The stamens are long and numerous and they lean out of the cup rather than standing straight. The notch is the single detail that separates a cherry blossom from a generic five-petal flower.
How do I draw the branch so the flowers sit in the right places?
Draw the wood first and the flowers second. Blossom grows in clusters from short spurs at the nodes, not evenly along the whole length, so mark the nodes before you add a single petal. A branch that tapers and changes direction at each node will carry flowers convincingly.
How do I draw a lot of blossom without it turning to mush?
Only draw three or four flowers fully. Everything behind them becomes a simplified outline, and the furthest mass becomes a soft edge with no petal detail at all. That depth ordering reads as density, whereas drawing every flower equally reads as a flat texture.
What colours work for a cherry blossom drawing?
Keep the pink very pale and push the contrast into the wood. A warm grey or brown branch against near-white petals gives you the separation, and a touch of deeper pink at the bud tips and the flower centre is usually all the saturation the drawing needs.
How do I get a clean background or reframe the branch?
Ask for a flat white background with no sky or setting behind the branch, then crop on the Canvas to the composition you want. That is worth doing if the drawing is going into a card, a print layout or a repeating pattern where the framing is decided later.
Can I keep a set of blossom drawings looking like one series?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first drawing, then apply it as you generate each branch and bud so the line weight, the petal treatment and the pink stay identical across the set. That consistency is what makes a group of botanical drawings hang together as a series.
