Put a step exactly where you cut
A single planted footfall with no tail lands on the frame you choose, so somebody stopping mid-shot reads cleanly. A game trigger uses that same short file.
Edit promptSteps that belong to the person on screen. Describe the weight, the shoe and the intent behind the walk, and the footfalls arrive at the pace your picture is already moving.

Each footfall a little brighter and fuller than the last. This is the card most edits actually need, because footsteps in a cut are usually somebody arriving rather than somebody simply walking.

Dull weighted thumps with the sole dragging as the weight rolls forward. That drag is what sells size, far more than making the step louder ever will.

Two events per step, a bright heel strike and a smaller toe click behind it. The gap between the two is what an audience hears as a heel, so it has to stay in.

Soft skin slaps with a faint tacky peel as the foot lifts. The peel is the detail that reads as bare rather than as somebody in socks, and it costs nothing to ask for.

Faint muffled presses with long silences between them. The silence is doing the acting here, so resist filling it, and the walk reads as somebody trying not to be heard.

A single planted step with a short scuff and no tail. Useful for the beat where somebody stops and turns, which no continuous walk can hand you at the right frame.

Edit promptEight seconds of even footfalls carry a passage with nothing else happening in it. An audio drama leans on this harder than film, since the steps are the only picture.
Edit promptHard heels and heavy boots describe two different people before either is seen. Animation uses the same shorthand to give a character a walk of their own.
Edit promptMuffled presses with long gaps place a second person nearby without a single frame of them. It fills an empty corridor in a game as convincingly as an empty hallway on film.
