Explosion sound effects

Sharp cracks, deep concussive booms, and the debris that falls after. Describe the size and distance and Morphic builds a blast with weight.

  • Set the size, the distance, and how long the rumble runs
  • A blast for your picture, not the hit in every action scene
  • Clean audio you can layer against the frame

Explosion sounds for film, games, and animation

Big blast

0:06

All three parts in order: a cracking transient, a concussive body, and a long rumble. The crack is what an audience reads as power, not the volume.

Small charge

0:02

Hard, bright, and over almost immediately. It reads as a device rather than an event, so it suits something precise going off rather than a building coming down.

Distant boom

0:06

No crack at all, only the low roll arriving late. Distance removes the transient first, which is exactly what tells an audience it happened somewhere else.

Blast and debris

0:05

The blast plus what comes down afterwards. The debris is what makes an explosion feel like it happened in a real place rather than in isolation.

Underwater blast

0:05

Muffled and pressurised with no high end at all, followed by water moving. Completely different from an air blast, and hard to fake by filtering one.

Shockwave

0:04

The pressure front on its own, with the blast stripped out. A low swelling push that arrives and passes, useful layered under a hit you already have.

Ways to use explosion sound effects

Land an impact on the exact frame

A small charge has a near-instant attack and no tail, so it hits precisely where you put it. Reach for it when the timing has to be exact.

Let a long rumble carry the beat after the hit

A long rumble after a hit carries a silent moment on its own. It works in a game level or an animated sequence the same way it does over live action.

Tell the audience a war is happening elsewhere

Distant booms with no crack place the fighting over the horizon. It builds a whole off-screen conflict for the cost of one clip.

Show destruction the camera never sees

A blast and then debris settling tells the audience something came down out of frame. The falling rubble does more than the explosion itself.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How do I make an explosion sound effect with real weight?
Describe it as three parts rather than one: a sharp cracking transient at the front, a deep concussive body behind it, and a long rumble decaying afterwards. Asking for an explosion on its own usually returns a flat boom with no transient, and the transient is what reads as power.
How do I make an explosion sound far away?
Remove the crack. Distance strips the high frequencies first, so a far-off blast is all low rolling boom with no sharp front to it, and it decays slowly. Adding that detail does more for the sense of distance than lowering the volume ever will.
Why does my explosion sound weak?
Usually because it has no transient. Volume is not what makes a blast feel powerful, the sharp crack at the front is, and a prompt that only asks for something deep and loud will skip it. Ask for the crack explicitly and the whole hit changes.
What is a shockwave sound and when do I use it?
The pressure front on its own, without the blast: a low swelling push that arrives and passes. It is most useful layered underneath an explosion you already have, to add physical weight without adding another transient competing with the first.
How do I stop an explosion burying my dialogue?
Keep the rumble and lose some of the crack, or place the blast in a gap rather than under a line. The transient occupies the same range as speech, which is why a big hit swallows a line even when the low end is well controlled.
Can I use these explosion sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each blast is generated rather than pulled from a shared catalogue, you also avoid the exact hit that is already under a hundred other action sequences.
