What is the difference between a chime and a bell?
A bell is struck once and rings as a single body. A chime is a set of tuned tubes or rods that sound against each other, so you get many small overlapping tones instead of one. They are different objects and they sit differently in a scene.
Why does my wind chime sound like someone playing it?
The spacing is too regular. Ask explicitly for uneven spacing between the knocks. Evenly spaced tones read as deliberate, and it is the irregularity that tells the ear this is wind and not a hand.
Which material should I use?
Metal tubes for a clear ringing chime, bamboo for a dry warm knock with no ring, glass for something bright and fragile. The material changes the emotional reading of the scene more than the tuning does.
How do I get a long ringing chime?
Ask for one long metal tube struck once and left to ring, with a slow even decay lasting several seconds, and generate at around six seconds. Trying to get length from a wind chime instead gives you more knocks, not a longer tone.
Can I get a notification chime rather than a hanging one?
Yes. Ask for two soft round tones with the second higher and nothing after them. Keeping it to two tones and removing the tail is what makes it read as a device rather than an instrument.
Can I use chime audio in a commercial project?
