Footstep Foley

The steps that put a walker on a surface and tell you their weight, pace, and shoe. Describe the footwear and the floor your shot is missing and Morphic generates the footstep foley in seconds.

  • Specify the shoe and the floor, heels on tile, boots through gravel, and get steps with the right weight, pace and surface grit.
  • Recorded for your character, so your lead doesn't walk on the same three steps as everyone else's.
  • Arrives dry and evenly spaced, easy to line up frame by frame or cut into a walk cycle.

Footstep foley for animation, games, and video edits

Boots on wood

Hard heel, hollow resonance underneath. Authority in a step, good for anyone arriving somewhere they intend to take charge of.

Heels on tile

Sharp, bright clicks with a long room reflection. Corridors, lobbies and kitchens; a lot of character in very little sound.

Sneakers on concrete

Soft rubber with a slight scuff on release. The everyday default for city scenes and modern characters not announcing themselves.

Boots on gravel

Crunch and shift with every footfall, weight rolling forward. Outdoors, uneven ground, and the effort that comes with both.

Bare feet on wood

Quiet slaps of skin with almost no attack. Vulnerable and domestic, night scenes, waking up, someone not expecting company.

Running footsteps

A quickening pattern with breath and imbalance in it. Pace does the work; slow it slightly and panic turns into purpose.

Ways to use footstep foley sound effects

Stop a character exactly where you want them

A final step landing on the cut gives an entrance a full stop, which matters as much in a stage-style audio drama as in an animated short.

An empty hallway and no dialogue

When a character crosses a room in silence, their steps become the scene, enough to hold a listener through a wordless page or shot.

Tell people what floor they're standing on

Gravel, tile and old floorboards each carry their own information, placing a location faster than a line of dialogue ever could.

Someone upstairs

Muffled steps overhead put a second person in the house while your camera stays downstairs, cheap tension in film, games and podcasts.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is footstep foley?
Footstep foley is the performed sound of a person walking, matched step for step to the picture. It sets the walker's weight, pace, and footwear, and it places them on a specific surface, because a camera rarely records footsteps cleanly on set. On screen it is one of the most constant sounds there is, so getting it right is what makes a character feel physically grounded.
Where can I get footstep foley for a video?
Generate it rather than search for it. Describing the shoe and surface takes less time than digging through a stock library, and you get the exact walk your shot needs instead of the closest available clip. Every sound on this page was made from the prompt printed beside it, so you can start from one and adjust it.
How do I make a custom footstep foley sound effect?
Describe the shoe, the surface, and the pace, then generate it. A prompt like "slow heavy boots on a wooden floor, firm steps, four over about 3 seconds" gives Morphic enough to work with, and you can adjust the wording until the steps line up with the walk on screen.
How do I match footsteps to the surface in my shot?
Name the surface explicitly in your prompt, because the same shoe sounds completely different on wood, gravel, tile, or grass. The surface carries more of the sound than the shoe does, so if a walk feels wrong it is usually because the floor in the audio does not match the floor on screen. Describe both, and the step lands where the picture puts it.
Can I use these footstep foley sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each sound is generated rather than pulled from a shared library, you also avoid the clip turning up in someone else's video.
Why does my footstep foley not sit right in the edit?
Usually the timing is wrong rather than the sound itself. Footsteps have to land frame-accurate on each footfall, and even a few frames of drift reads as dubbed. Generate a walk at the pace you need, then align each step to the picture, and it settles into the scene with far less mixing.
