Lightning sound effect

The tearing crack of a strike and everything that rolls after it. Say how close the discharge is and how long the tail is allowed to run.

  • Say how close the discharge is and how far the tail rolls behind it
  • A strike written for your scene, not the one clip every trailer already uses
  • Audio that arrives uncompressed, so the crack still tears when you place it

Lightning strikes for film, games, and animation

Close strike

The discharge landing on top of you, all front edge and no roll. This is the card most scenes want, because the split second of tearing air is the part an audience reads as lightning rather than thunder.

Sparking sizzle

Thousands of tiny snaps running through air just before the main event. Lay it under the two seconds before a flash and the strike stops being a surprise and starts being inevitable.

Strike and roll

The crack and the fifteen seconds of rolling that answers it. Most stock versions cut the tail short, and the tail is what tells an audience how much sky the storm covers.

Distant strike

The same discharge with its high edge gone and a faint echo behind it. Distance is a change of colour rather than a change of level, which is why simply turning a close strike down never convinces.

Double strike

Two discharges a fraction of a second apart, the second drier than the first. The repeat reads as a storm actively working, where a single strike can read as a one-off.

Rolling storm bed

Twenty seconds of low rumbling with cracks breaking through at uneven intervals. A whole scene can sit on it, and the unevenness is what stops the ear noticing where it starts.

Ways to use a lightning sound effect

Punctuate the frame a flash lands on

A tearing crack marks the single frame the picture goes white. It syncs the same way in a game cinematic or an animated sequence as it does on shot footage.

Hold a still shot on rumble instead of a score

Twenty seconds of low rolling carries a static frame with no music at all. It leaves the whole mid range clear, so dialogue or narration sits over it untouched.

Tell the audience the storm is right on top of them

A crack with no gap before the roll puts the discharge directly overhead. Move the roll later and the same storm retreats to the horizon without a single new asset.

Put a strike outside a window you never cut to

A dulled distant crack with a short echo behind it builds weather nobody has to shoot. An interior scene gets a sky it never shows, in a game level as much as on film.

자주 묻는 질문

What is the difference between a lightning sound and a thunder sound?
Lightning is the tearing crack made as the discharge splits the air, and thunder is the long rumble of that same air collapsing back afterwards. A strike close by is mostly crack, and one far away is almost entirely rumble, so the balance between them is what sets the distance.
How do I make a lightning sound effect?
Describe the discharge as air being torn apart. Say how hard the front edge splits, whether anything sizzles before it, and how long the rolling behind it lasts. Asking for the mechanism gets you a strike, where asking for a storm gets you a general weather bed.
Why does my lightning sound like a gunshot?
Because the tail is missing. A gunshot is a single hard crack that stops, while a strike keeps tearing for a moment and then rolls. Add the splintering after the front edge and the rumble behind it, and the same attack stops reading as a weapon.
How do I make a strike read as distant?
Take the high end off it and let a short echo trail behind, rather than turning it down. Air removes the sharp top edge over distance and reflects the rest back slightly late, so the tone dulls and softens. That change of colour is what the ear measures.
How long should the rumble after a strike last?
Fifteen seconds or more for anything meant to feel large. The roll is the only part of the sound that describes the size of the storm, so cutting it at three seconds shrinks the sky above your scene however violent the crack in front of it is.
Can I use generated lightning sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Generating the strike also means the storm in your project is not the same recording that has been rolling under trailers for the last twenty years.
