What did a T-rex actually sound like?
Nobody knows, and that is the honest answer. Palaeontologists working from the animal's closest living relatives, crocodilians and birds, suggest a closed-mouth booming rumble rather than the open-mouthed roar films use. The screaming version audiences recognise is a piece of sound design, which is why it has to be built rather than found.
How do I make a T-rex roar sound effect?
Describe the mechanism in layers. Anchor the size first, say the sound is driven from the chest, add a grainy rattle through the middle, and decide whether a bright strained scream rides on top of it. Naming the dinosaur on its own gives a generator nothing physical to build from, so it reaches for whatever big animal it knows.
Why does my dinosaur roar come back sounding like a big cat?
Because a bare request for a roar lands in the middle of the low band where big-cat recordings dominate the training data. Ask for a reptilian predator, describe the blast of air out of the chest rather than a rasping bellow, and add a line ruling out a cat and a bear as a backstop.
How do I make the creature sound bigger?
Slow everything down and lengthen the tail. A larger body moves more air and takes longer to do it, so a six-second call that opens out slowly reads as enormous while the same tone in two seconds reads as a medium animal shouting. Pitch alone will not do it.
What else do I need besides the roar?
Breath and jaws. A creature that only roars sounds like a sound effect, while one that snorts between calls and closes its mouth audibly sounds like an animal that exists off screen too. Generate the rumble, the breath and the snap as separate clips and place them around the bellow.
