Wind sound effects

Air moving past something: a gap in a door, bare branches, long grass, a mountain ridge. Name the surface and Morphic builds the wind.

  • Name the surface the air moves past, and the wind writes itself
  • A bed built for your location, not the one stock gust everyone uses
  • Long, clean takes you can lay under a whole scene
Long grass laid flat by a gust on an open ridge, low sun raking across it

Winds for exteriors, games, and animation

Wind in bare branches

A dry rushing hiss with wood clattering inside it. The clatter is what places the scene, because a hiss on its own could be anywhere at all.

Wind in long grass

A soft wash that rises and falls in waves. The most useful open-country bed, because it reads as space without ever pulling focus from dialogue.

Gap under a door

Air squeezed through a narrow opening until it whistles. The most claustrophobic wind on the page, and the only one that says interior.

Storm gusts

Heavy air hitting a building in surges, with pressure underneath. The surging is what makes it a storm rather than simply a louder breeze.

Mountain ridge wind

Thin, high, and empty, with nothing for the air to catch on. The lack of texture is the point: it sounds like altitude and nothing else.

Single door gust

One burst of air arriving as a door opens, with paper lifting behind it. A short event rather than a bed, so it can be cut to a frame.

Ways to use a wind sound effect

Punctuate the moment a door opens

A single gust with paper moving behind it marks the change of space. It gives the cut a physical event rather than only a picture edit.

Fill an exterior without reaching for music

Fifteen seconds of grass moving carries a wide shot on its own, in a game landscape or an animated field as much as on location.

Tell the audience what season it is

Bare branches clattering say winter with no snow in frame. Long grass says late summer. The surface the air touches carries the whole calendar.

Show weather you never had to shoot

Gusts pressing against a building put a storm outside a window that shows nothing. Cheaper than rain machines and far easier to control.

자주 묻는 질문

How do I make a wind sound effect?
Name the surface the air moves past. Wind is silent on its own, and everything you hear comes from grass, branches, wires, or a gap it is being forced through. Give a generator that surface and you get a wind with a location built into it.
Why does my wind sound like static?
Because there is nothing in it for the air to move. A featureless rush is just filtered noise, so add a surface: rustling grass, clattering branches, or a whistling gap. The texture is what separates wind from hiss.
How long should a wind bed be?
Fifteen to twenty seconds at least. Wind is one of the few sounds an audience will hear for a whole scene, and a short take forces a join that the ear tends to notice however carefully it is placed.
What is the difference between a breeze and a gust?
A breeze holds a steady level and a gust surges and drops. If your wind sounds flat and artificial, the missing detail is almost always variation, so ask for it to rise and fall in waves rather than blow evenly.
How do I make wind sound cold?
Take the texture away and raise the pitch. A thin, bare rush across open rock reads as exposed and cold, while the same strength of wind moving through leaves reads as mild. Cold is the absence of soft surfaces.
Can I use generated wind sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Generating the bed also means your exterior does not share its wind with every other production using the same library.
