Rewind sound effect

The sound of something being wound back. Name the machine, say how fast it spins and how it stops, and get a take cut to your own edit.

  • Name the machine winding back and how fast the reel turns
  • A rewind built for your gap, not a stock file stretched until it fits
  • Audio dry enough to keep the mechanism audible under a voiceover

Rewind sounds for edits, shorts, and game audio

Tape whirr

A motor dragging tape backwards past metal, climbing in pitch as the reel gathers speed. The card most edits want, because the rising pitch is what makes it read as rewinding rather than simply spinning.

Deck rewind

Three events in order: the clunk into gear, the spool, and the clack at the end. The mechanical bookends are what place a physical machine in the room rather than an effect on a timeline.

Backwards rush

Air pulled inward, swelling and stopping at its peak. No machine in it at all, so it suits a stylised jump back in time where a tape deck would date the scene.

Fast scrub

Sound chopped into short backwards smears at an even rate. It reads as digital rather than mechanical, which is the right choice when the thing being wound back is footage on a screen.

Zip rewind

A ratchet run backwards, dozens of tiny clicks accelerating and climbing together. The cartoon version, and the only card here that is funny rather than mechanical.

Long spool run

Twelve seconds of steady spooling that slows and knocks to a halt. Long enough to run under a recap, where every short rewind has to be joined and the join is always audible.

Ways to use a rewind sound effect

Snap the audience back to something they just saw

A two second backwards rush throws a viewer to an earlier moment. It reads instantly on a short, in an animated sequence, or in a game replay with no caption needed.

Run a recap without laying a track under it

Twelve seconds of spooling carries a whole run of clips on its own. It keeps the mid range clear, so a narrator can talk across the top of it the entire time.

Date a scene to the machine doing the winding

A deck clunking into gear places a story squarely in the cassette era. The chopped digital version moves the same edit forty years later without touching the picture.

Suggest a machine you never put in shot

A whirr rising in pitch puts a working deck just off frame. The audience builds the object from the motor alone, which is cheaper than dressing a set for it.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How do I make a rewind sound effect?
Describe the machine rather than the transition. Say what is being wound back, how fast the reel turns, whether the pitch climbs as it accelerates, and how it stops. A generator understands a motor pulling tape past metal far better than it understands rewind.
What is the difference between a rewind and a reverse sound?
A rewind is a machine running a recording backwards, so you hear the motor and the mechanism. A reverse sound is the audio itself played the other way, with no machine in it at all. One dates your scene to a device, the other does not.
Why does my rewind sound like a plain whoosh?
Because there is no mechanism in it. A rush of air alone has nothing turning, so add the detail that gives it a machine: tape moving across metal guides, a reel accelerating, a plastic mechanism clunking as it engages and again as it stops.
How long should a rewind sound be?
Two to three seconds if it marks a jump, ten or more if it runs under a recap. The mistake worth avoiding is stretching a short one to cover a long sequence, since the join always lands somewhere the ear is listening.
Should a rewind end with a clack?
Only if you want the audience to feel the machine stop. A hard mechanical clack gives the sound a definite ending, which suits a cut back to the present, while an open ending lets the next scene begin before the rewind has finished.
Can I use generated rewind sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. That is worth knowing here because most of the tape and deck sounds circulating online were captured off broadcast material rather than recorded and cleared.
