Mark where the joke was
A standard burst starts and stops cleanly on the frame, telling an audience a line was the punchline whether or not it was.

Laugh track sound effects
The canned audience that tells you where the joke was. Sitcom laughter is supposed to sound artificial, and these lean into it rather than hiding it.
- Set the size of the audience and how canned it should sound
- A track cut to your beat, not a clip stretched to fit
- Clean audio that starts and stops on the frame
Laugh track types for edits, comedy, and animation
Standard burst
0:04A medium audience starting and stopping cleanly. The clean edges are the tell, and they are supposed to be.
Big laugh
0:06A large audience with scattered whoops, swelling then settling. Reserved for the line the episode was built around.
Light chuckle
0:03Brief and low with no real energy. It marks a line as a joke without claiming it was a good one.
Awkward silence
0:04One isolated cough and nothing else. The absence of a laugh where one belongs is a stronger joke than any laugh.
Aww
0:04A sympathetic group sigh rather than a laugh. Sitcoms use it constantly and almost nobody thinks to look for it.
Applause and laughter
0:06Laughter rolling into applause. It closes a scene rather than punctuating a line, which is a different job.

Ways to use a laugh track sound effect
Let laughter roll into applause
Applause continuing after the laughter closes a scene, which is why sitcoms use it before a cut to titles.
Prompt bearbeiten
Undercut a line by withholding
A single cough where a laugh belongs is funnier than any laugh, because the absence is the comment.
Prompt bearbeiten
Tell the audience how to feel
An aww is the other half of the device. It instructs sympathy the way a laugh instructs amusement, and it works just as bluntly.

Häufig gestellte Fragen
Should a laugh track sound artificial?
Yes. Clean starts and stops are the convention, and an audience recognises the device rather than being fooled by it. Trying to make one sound natural is what makes it sound wrong instead of stylised.
How is this different from real laughter?
Real laughter is uneven, with people starting and trailing off at different moments. A laugh track is a block that begins and ends together, because it is an editorial instruction rather than a recording of a room.
What is the funniest way to use one?
Withhold it. A single cough in a silent studio audience where a laugh belongs comments on the line far more sharply than any laugh, and it only works because the convention is so well established.
What is the aww used for?
Instructing sympathy. It is the other half of the same device, telling an audience how to feel about a moment rather than whether it was funny, and sitcoms use it constantly.
How do I close a scene with one?
Use laughter rolling into applause that continues afterwards. That combination signals the end of a segment, which is why it appears before cuts to titles or ad breaks.
Can I use these laugh tracks commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Generating your own also avoids the licensing question that comes with lifting audience audio from an existing broadcast.
