One pose, four angles

The same standing pose drawn four times in red sanguine chalk, front, back and both profiles, each at the same height so the twist can be compared.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is gesture drawing actually for?
It trains you to read the whole pose before any part of it. You are recording where the weight sits, which way the body twists and where the movement is heading, not the outline. Everything you learn there is what stops a sustained drawing looking stiff later.
How do I find the line of action?
Look for the longest curve in the pose and draw that first, usually running from the head down through the spine to the weight-bearing foot. One stroke, edge to edge. If you can see the pose in that single line, the rest of the figure can hang off it.
How long should a gesture drawing take?
Thirty seconds to two minutes for most practice. Short enough that you cannot describe detail, which is the point. Longer settings of five or ten minutes are still gesture as long as you keep building the whole figure at once rather than finishing it part by part.
Why do my gesture drawings look stiff?
Usually because the marks are short and cautious. Draw from the shoulder rather than the wrist so the line travels further, and let it overshoot the form. Blocking the ribcage and pelvis as two simple masses that tilt against each other also fixes most stiffness on its own.
How do I get a plain background or a toned one for a gesture page?
Ask for off-white newsprint or a flat toned ground with no room around the figure, then crop it on the Canvas. A neutral ground keeps the marks readable, and it is what you want if you are assembling several studies into one sheet.
Can I keep a whole page of gesture studies in one style?
Use Style Transfer. Lock the look of the first study, then apply it as you generate each pose so the mark weight, medium and paper tone stay the same. That matters most on a practice sheet, where mismatched line weights make the poses look unrelated.
