Questions fréquentes

How do I draw a marigold step by step?
Draw the outer circle of the whole head first, then work inward in rings of scalloped petals, each ring slightly smaller and tilted more toward the centre. Keep the petal tips notched rather than pointed and the flower reads immediately.
How do I draw all those petals without it turning to mush?
Vary the ring spacing and let some petals overlap their neighbours rather than sitting side by side. Shade the gaps between rings, not the petals themselves, so the shadows carry the depth and the surface stays light.
How do I draw a marigold garland?
Draw the thread first as one relaxed curve, then hang the heads along it at slightly uneven intervals. Make the flowers nearer the low point of the curve sit a little larger and the string looks like it carries weight.
What colours make a marigold look right?
Build from yellow at the base of the petals through orange to a deeper rust in the shadows between rings. A single flat orange flattens the head, and a touch of the same rust on the calyx ties the flower to the stem.
Can I get a marigold drawing with a plain background?
Yes. Ask for a plain white background with no stem, no leaves and no cast shadow, then crop it on the Canvas. That gives you a clean head to repeat into a garland, a border or a printed layout.
Which angle is easiest for a marigold?
Face on, because the petal rings stay concentric and you only have to keep the spacing even. A three-quarter view is harder since the rings turn into ellipses and the far petals have to compress.
