What actually makes this sound work?
A descending interval and a short tail. Two notes where the second is lower and shorter reads as deflation in almost any instrument, which is why the cue survives being pitched, slowed, or swapped to a bell.
How do I make it funnier?
Make it disproportionate. A deep, slow, heavily tailed fall on a trivial mistake is funnier than a small one, because the gap between the sound and the event is where the joke lives.
Where exactly should it land in the cut?
A beat after the failure, not on it. Landing it on the same frame reads as a sound effect; leaving a few frames first reads as a reaction to what just happened.
How is this different from a sad trombone?
