Gunshot sound effects

A pistol crack, a shotgun blast and its pump, a rifle report with a long tail, a burst of machine gun fire, and the slide rack before it. Describe the weapon and the space.

Gunshots for film, games, and animation

Single pistol shot

A sharp crack with a hard instant attack and almost no tail. The default gunshot, and the one that reads as close and enclosed rather than out in the open.

Shotgun blast

Wider and lower than a pistol, with a rough scattering edge on the attack. Use it when the shot needs to feel heavy rather than precise.

Shotgun pump

The mechanical slide and lock between shots. A small sound that carries more threat than the blast does, because of what the audience knows comes next.

Rifle with a long tail

A hard high-pressure crack followed by a tail that rolls away and thins out. The tail is what tells the audience the shot happened somewhere wide and open.

Machine gun burst

Six rapid evenly spaced cracks of machine gun fire and then nothing. A burst reads as controlled where a long run reads as panic, so the count does the characterisation.

Slide rack and reload

A magazine seated and a slide released, with no shot after it. Reach for it in the beat before a scene turns, or under a hand you never cut to.

Ways to use a gunshot sound effect

Punctuate the moment everything changes

A single crack on the cut is the hardest punctuation in a scene, in a game cutscene as much as on film. Nothing after it needs explaining.

Fill a tense pause without music

A slide rack in a silence does the work a score would do, and it keeps the scene inside the room instead of lifting it out to a soundtrack.

Tell the audience how open the space is

A dry crack with no tail reads as indoors and close. The same shot with a long rolling tail reads as open ground. The decay sets the location, not the picture.

Put a firefight beyond the frame

Bursts thinned and pushed back place a fight somewhere the camera never goes, so a scene can sit on one face while the action stays off screen.

Questions fréquentes

How do I make a gunshot sound like it is indoors or outdoors?
Change the tail, not the shot. A hard crack with a short dry cut-off reads as close and enclosed; the same crack followed by a long tail rolling away and thinning reads as open ground.
How do I get a shotgun instead of a pistol?
Describe the attack. A shotgun is a wide low-heavy boom with a rough scattering edge, where a pistol is a sharp high crack. Naming the weapon alone is less reliable than naming how the front of the sound behaves.
How do I get machine gun fire rather than a single shot?
Give it a count and a rhythm. "Six rapid evenly spaced cracks in quick succession then silence" returns a machine gun burst; asking for automatic fire without a count tends to return one shot or an unusably long run.
Why does my gunshot come back quiet or empty?
It was asked for too short. Anything under about a second and a half tends to return silence, so ask for 2 seconds and trim the tail in your editor if you want it tighter.
Can I use gunshot audio in a game or a monetised video?
Yes. Audio generated on a paid Morphic plan is cleared for commercial use, which covers games, monetised video, and broadcast. Download it and place it on your timeline.
Can I get the mechanical sounds without a shot?
Yes, and they are often the more useful half. Ask for a pump, a slide rack, or a magazine seated and released on its own, and nothing fires, which is what you want in the beat before a scene turns.
