How do I make a shush a warning rather than a comfort?
Shorten it. Under two seconds with a hard front and a quick cut-off reads as a command, while four seconds fading gently reads as somebody settling a child. Volume changes almost nothing.
How is this different from the whispers page?
Words. Whispers are speech at low volume and carry content; a shush is a single non-verbal act with one meaning. A scene almost never wants both at the same moment.
Why does my shush sound like static?
It lost the mouth. Say "from a human mouth" explicitly and keep it dry and close, since a hiss with no vocal character behind it is indistinguishable from noise.
How do I get a whole room to shush?
Ask for many separate voices each starting a fraction apart, overlapping then thinning out. Prompting the room as one event returns a single long hiss rather than a crowd.
What is the most interesting version?
