Storm sound effects

Storms without thunder: a blizzard, a sandstorm, a gale off the sea, hail on a roof, a shutter working loose, and the strange calm before any of it.

  • Ask for what the wind is carrying, which is what makes a blizzard different from a sandstorm
  • A bed built for your location rather than a stock wind track used across other productions

Weather beds for film, games, and animation

Blizzard

Wind carrying fine dry snow, soft and muffled. Snow absorbs the high end, which is what makes it gentler than sand.

Sandstorm

The same wind with a gritty edge on it. The grit is the whole difference, and it is what an audience hears as hostile.

Sea gale

A deep low moan under a broad hiss, surging and easing. The surge is what puts open water under it.

Hail on a roof

Hard pellets at uneven spacing on a thin surface. Prompted as its unit first, or it comes back as static.

Shutter working loose

A wooden panel banging irregularly against a frame. One small repeated event that says the storm is winning.

The calm before

A very low steady pressure with almost nothing in it. Unnatural stillness, and it sets up everything that follows.

Ways to use a storm sound effect

Punctuate a door opening

Cutting from the calm to a full gale on the frame a door opens does more than any shot of the weather outside.

Fill an interior without music

Hail on a roof over a quiet room keeps a long scene alive, and it makes the inside feel safer than the outside.

Tell the audience where on earth this is

The same wind is a blizzard when it is soft and muffled, and a sandstorm when it has grit in it. The cargo is the location.

Imply a storm you never show

A shutter banging irregularly puts weather outside a window that the camera never has to look through.

Questions fréquentes

Where is the thunder?
On the thunderstorm page, which owns thunder and rain. This page is the storms that are not that: blizzards, sandstorms, sea gales, hail. Keeping them apart means neither page is a weaker version of the other.
How do I make one wind bed into a specific place?
Name what it is carrying. Fine dry snow reads as a blizzard, fine dry particles read as a sandstorm, and open water adds a low moan. The wind underneath is identical in all three.
Why does my hail sound like static?
It was prompted as a texture. Any dense natural sound needs its unit first, here small hard pellets striking a thin surface, and the density second, or it flattens into noise.
What is the most useful clip for an interior scene?
The shutter. One loose panel banging at uneven intervals puts a storm outside a window without a bed running under the whole scene, and it leaves room for dialogue.
Do I need the calm before?
If the storm arrives during your scene, yes. A very low steady pressure with almost nothing in it makes the cut to a full gale land, and without it the storm is just weather that was always there.
Can I use these in a commercial project?
Yes. Audio generated on a paid Morphic plan is cleared for commercial use, including film, games, and advertising.
