Blood

In 1846 Wallachia, eight lords once agreed to something that was never written down, and one by one they are dying in their own homes with no sign of how.

The man killing them can only enter a house if he's invited, so he spends a year at a time building a false identity, getting hired, and waiting, and every death costs him more of himself than the last.

A private investigator has found the pattern but not the man, and neither of them yet understands what those eight names actually signed.
