How do I stop hair looking like separate lines?
Ask for strands grouped into large masses with shadow between them. Drawing the masses first and the individual strands last is what makes hair read as a single volume.
Where should the highlight sit in a hair drawing?
Place it as one continuous band around the curve of the skull rather than scattered flecks. Saying single highlight band in the prompt gives a much cleaner result.
How do I draw curly or coiled hair?
Describe each coil as a small mass of shadow with light on its outer edge, not as a drawn spiral. Charcoal suits it because the depth between coils can be smudged.
How do I draw a braid that reads correctly?
Ask for hatching that follows each cross-over section. When the stroke direction turns with the weave, the braid reads as woven rather than as stacked shapes.
Can I draw hair without drawing a face?
Yes. Ask for a view from behind or a macro study of one lock. The hair stays the subject and the face is simply not in frame.
