How do I draw seaweed so it looks like it is floating?
Bend every strand the same way. Seaweed drifts with the current, so the blades should all lean and curve in one direction with slight variation, and the tips should trail rather than point. A strand drawn straight up reads as a plant on land.
How do I draw different types of seaweed?
Pick a growth form and name it. Kelp is long strap-like blades from a single stipe, bladder wrack is forked with paired air bladders, sea lettuce is a thin crumpled sheet, and red weeds are fine and feathery. Mixing three forms makes a convincing group.
What is a holdfast and should I draw it?
It is the root-like base that grips rock rather than feeding the plant. Drawing it anchors the seaweed to something solid and stops the strand looking like it was pasted onto the page. It works well as a detail study on its own.
