Bat sound effects

Leathery wingbeats, high chittering, and a roost full of them. Most bat calls sit beyond human hearing, so these are what an audience reads.

  • Ask for one bat or a whole roost, and how close it passes
  • A sound made for your cave or attic, not a shared stock clip
  • Clean audio ready to sit under a night scene

Bat sounds for film, games, and horror edits

Wingbeats

0:02

Thin membrane rather than feathers, which is what makes a bat sound unlike any bird. Dry, quick, and slightly papery.

Chittering

0:04

Thin squeaky clicks tumbling over each other. This is the part of a bat's voice people can actually hear, and it reads as small and agitated.

Colony in a cave

0:06

Hundreds of animals squeaking and shuffling at once. The constant wing rustle underneath is what makes it a roost rather than a crowd of birds.

プロンプトを編集

Swarm taking off

0:05

A whole colony erupting at once, swelling and passing. Movement rather than a state, so it carries a beat all by itself.

プロンプトを編集

Single pass

0:02

One animal crossing the frame fast, quiet then close then gone. The whole event is over almost before it registers, which is the effect.

プロンプトを編集

Roosting shuffle

0:04

Small dry scuffling and the odd squeak from something hanging above. Quiet and constant, which is far more unsettling than a swarm.

Ways to use bat sound effects

Startle a scene with something passing

A single close pass rises and is gone almost before it registers, which is why it works as a jolt. The speed is the effect, not the volume.

Let a roost hold a static frame

Quiet shuffling overhead gives a still shot something to sit under, and it stays clear of dialogue. It suits a game level as much as film.

Say the space is enclosed and full

Dense squeaking with wing rustle underneath places a scene inside a cave or an attic. The reflections do more than any reverb you add later.

Fill a dark sky nobody films

Wingbeats overhead tell the audience the air is full of them, in a shot pointed anywhere else. The cheapest way to populate a night.

よくある質問

What do bats actually sound like?
To human ears, mostly wingbeats and high chittering. Their echolocation calls sit above the range people can hear, so what an audience recognises as a bat is the dry, leathery flap of the wing membrane and the thin squeaks between calls.
Can I use real echolocation in a video?
Not usefully, because most of it is inaudible without being pitched down, and pitched-down echolocation sounds like clicks rather than like a bat. Audiences read wingbeats and chittering as bats, so those are what a scene needs.
How do I make bat wings sound different from bird wings?
Ask for thin membrane and no feathers. A bat wing is dry and slightly papery with a quick flap, while feathers add a soft rustle underneath. Naming the absence of feathers is the most reliable way to separate the two.
How do I build a cave roost?
Ask for hundreds of animals chittering and shuffling with constant wing rustling underneath, and mention the enclosed space so the reflections come with it. The rustle is what stops it sounding like a flock of small birds.
What is the most unsettling bat sound to use?
Quiet roosting shuffle, usually, rather than a swarm. A swarm is an event that resolves, whereas small dry movements overhead that never quite stop keep an audience aware that something is up there without ever showing it.
Can I use these bat sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each one is generated rather than pulled from a shared catalogue, you also avoid the clip turning up in someone else's night sequence.
