Horn sound effect

Every horn a scene might need, from a city car to a ship in fog. Say which one, how far away, and how long it holds.

  • Name the vehicle, the distance, and how long the note is held
  • A horn matched to your scene rather than the nearest stock clip
  • Clean audio that keeps its edge when you place it in traffic

Horns for traffic, transport, and comedy edits

Car horn beep

One short two-tone beep from a small car, bright and nasal. The version most edits need, because it reads as traffic without dragging a whole street in with it.

Angry beeps

Several jabs in a row, impatient rather than musical. The irregular spacing is what makes it read as a person leaning on it rather than a signal.

Truck air horn

Deep, brassy, and far bigger than a car. It changes the size of the vehicle in the audience mind without a single frame of the truck.

Ship horn

An enormous low note with a slow swell and a long fade. The swell is what sells the scale, since nothing that big starts instantly.

Distant horn

The same car horn heard from streets away, dulled and softened. Derived from a close take rather than asked for quietly, which is how distance actually works.

Party horn

A paper blowout rather than a vehicle: a squeaky rasp with a rattle at the end. The odd one of the six, and the one comedy edits actually want.

Ways to use a horn sound effect

Punctuate a near miss on the exact frame

A short bright beep has a hard front edge, so it lands where you place it. That precision is the difference between a scare and a sound arriving late.

Fill a quiet exterior without reaching for music

A held ship note carries six seconds of a still shot on its own. It works over a game harbour or an animated waterfront as much as a live-action one.

Tell the audience where the scene is

A distant, dulled beep says city; a truck air horn says highway. One sound sets the location before the picture has had to establish anything.

Put a driver off screen who never appears

Impatient beeps from outside the frame create a person with a point of view you never have to cast, shoot, or light.

よくある質問

What kinds of horn sound effects are there?
Four families cover almost every use: small vehicle horns, which are bright and two-toned; large air horns, which are deep and brassy; marine horns, which are enormous and swell slowly; and novelty horns like a paper blowout. Size and swell are what separate them by ear.
How do I make a horn sound effect?
Name the vehicle and its size first, then say how long the note is held and whether it starts instantly or swells. Those three details produce a horn the audience believes; asking for a horn alone usually returns something car-sized regardless of the scene.
How do I make a horn sound far away?
Do not ask for a quiet one. Generators render quietness as near-silence, so ask instead for the high edge to be gone, the tone dulled, and a faint short echo behind it. Distance is a change in colour, not a change in level.
Why does my car horn sound like a toy?
Because it lacks the second tone. Real vehicle horns sound two pitches together, and a single pure note reads as a novelty item. Ask explicitly for two tones sounding at once and the size problem usually fixes itself.
How long should a horn blast be?
A jab is about a second and a half, an impatient run of them about three seconds, and a marine horn six or more. Bigger horns need longer, because the swell at the front is part of what tells the audience how large the source is.
Can I use generated horn sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. A generated horn also arrives without the street it was recorded on, so you can place it in your own traffic rather than someone else's.
