Phonograph

The thin, tinny tune of an old horn phonograph under heavy hiss, the ratchet of the hand crank and the drag of a record slowing down. Describe the phonograph your scene needs and Morphic generates it clean.

  • Tinny horn playback, the crank winding up or the record slowing, exactly as asked
  • A tinny horn tuned to your parlour scene and the record on its turntable
  • Clean, isolated audio to drop under the horn, the crank or the needle

Phonograph sounds for games, animation, and video edits

Tinny horn playback

A thin, nasal tune through a flared horn and thick hiss, the instant sound of a century-old record playing.

プロンプトを編集

Hand crank

The ratchet and creak of the spring being wound, the ritual that starts any old phonograph scene.

プロンプトを編集

Needle drop

A dull thump through the horn then a rising hiss, the moment before the music starts in a parlour or a mystery.

プロンプトを編集

Winding down

The tune sagging lower as the spring runs out, for a party fading, a power cut or a creepy slowdown.

プロンプトを編集

Run-out groove

The steady click and swish at the end of a record that nobody has lifted, a bed for an abandoned room or a haunted scene.

プロンプトを編集

Tone arm lift

A scrape as the needle leaves the groove, a clunk as the arm is set down, the end of the music in one move.

Ways to use a phonograph sound effect

Stop the party when the record dies

The tune sagging to a halt on the frame the dancers freeze lands the moment, in a period comedy, an animated short or a mystery game.

Hold an empty room with no score

A record clicking in its run-out groove carries a long silent shot of an abandoned room, in horror video, games and audio dramas.

Take the viewer back a hundred years

Tinny horn playback over the opening shot sets the era before a single costume appears, in period drama, narrative games and history podcasts.

Hint that someone just started the music

A crank winding and a needle dropping off screen say someone else is in the house, useful in mystery video, horror games and audio stories.

よくある質問

What is a phonograph sound effect?
It is the sound of an early record player with a hand crank and a flared horn: thin, nasal playback under heavy hiss, the ratchet of the spring winding, the needle dropping and the tune slowing as the spring runs out. It places a scene in the early twentieth century almost instantly.
Where can I get phonograph sounds for a video?
Generate them from a prompt. Describing the sound you want takes less time than digging through a stock library, and the exact horn, crank or needle moment your scene needs is generated for you. Every sound on this page was made from the prompt printed beside it, so you can start from one and adjust it.
How do I make a custom phonograph sound effect?
Describe the part of the machine, the moment and how worn the record is, then generate it. A prompt like "a phonograph needle lowered onto a spinning record, a dull thump through the horn, then a hiss and steady crackle" gives Morphic enough to work with, and you can adjust the wording until it fits the shot.
What is the difference between a phonograph, vinyl crackle and a record scratch?
A phonograph sound is the whole early machine: the horn, the hand crank, the spring and its thin nasal tone. Vinyl crackle is the surface noise of a modern record on its own, and a record scratch is a needle dragged back and forth across a groove. For a scene set before electric record players, you want the phonograph.
Can I use these phonograph sounds commercially?
Yes, audio generated on paid plans can be used commercially. See our terms for full licensing details. Because each sound is generated for you, you also avoid the clip turning up in someone else's video.
Why does my phonograph sound not sit right in the edit?
Usually it sounds too full and clean for an old horn. A real phonograph has almost no deep bass or bright treble, so roll both off until it sounds thin and nasal. If the machine sits across the room on screen, lower it and let a little of the room in so it does not sound like it is in the viewer's ear.
