How do I draw a mermaid tail that looks believable?
Keep the hip and thigh structure under the scales. A tail is not a cone stuck to a waist, it narrows at the hip, widens again over the thigh, then tapers to the ankle before the fluke spreads. Drawing the leg shape first and scaling over it is what stops the tail looking like a sock.
How do I draw scales without drawing every one?
Draw them fully in one small area where the light falls, then let the pattern break down into suggestion elsewhere and disappear entirely in shadow. Curve the rows so they follow the tail rather than sitting flat, and vary the scale size, larger at the hip and smaller toward the fluke.
How do I draw hair underwater?
Move it as a slow mass rather than as strands. Break the hair into three or four large ribbons that lift and curl in the same direction, with a short lag behind the head movement. A few loose strands escaping the mass is enough detail, and drawing every strand makes it look dry.
How do I draw the transition where the tail meets the body?
Do not make it a hard line across the waist. Let the scales start small and scattered around the hip and lower abdomen, then thicken into full coverage a few inches down. A gradual change reads as one creature, while a clean seam reads as a costume.
How do I get a plain background for a mermaid drawing?
Ask for a flat white background with no water, no rocks and no setting, then crop the figure on the Canvas. That leaves you a clean silhouette for a sticker, a book page or a set of matching character illustrations.
