How is a pen drawing different from a pencil drawing?
Pen has no eraser and no mid grey, so all the tone comes from how densely you place the marks. That is why pen work leans on hatching, cross-hatching and stipple, and why the white of the paper does so much of the job.
Which pen should I ask for?
A fineliner gives an even technical line, a ballpoint gives soft layered tone, a brush pen gives strokes that swell and taper, and a technical pen is the one for stipple. Naming the pen changes the result more than naming the subject does.
How do I build tone in pen without it going flat?
Vary the spacing rather than the pressure. Ask for open parallel lines in the light areas, crossing layers in the mid tones and solid black only in the deepest shadow, with the highlights left as untouched paper.
Can I draw with a ballpoint pen properly?
Yes, and blue ballpoint in particular gives a soft buildable grey. Ask for tone layered in small circular strokes over several passes. It is slower than hatching but it holds subtle gradients better.
How do I make a pen drawing of a pen?
Ask for it as an object study: the barrel as a long cylinder with hatching wrapping around it, the clip and grip drawn crisply, and a hard highlight down one side. Use a flat even outline instead if you want it for an icon.
How do I keep the line weight consistent across a series?
Use Style Transfer to lock the pen type, line weight and hatching density, then change only the subject. Without that, each new prompt tends to drift toward a slightly different nib.
